Pause and Reflect Questions...And Thinking Through

Pause and Reflect

1) pg 266- My impression towards Oedipus as a leader is that he comes off not brave abd coward of himself because is says how he wept throught the nights. It makes him seem like hes moping and like has no confidence. My impression would change if he stood up to being a better leader and stoped crying.

2) pg 269- I believe the cause of the plague in Thebes is the king had died.

3) pg 272- The details that helped me visualize Thebes as a city of death were its stating that thebes is dying and death is spreading death.

4) pg 275- The curse Oedipus puts on the killer or killers of Laius was the plague.

5) pg 281- Tiresias names Oedipus as the murderer of Laius.

6) pg 291- Oedipus turns against Creon because he was told that Creon was plotting to kill him.

7) pg 299- Oedipus becomes fearful when he hears that piece of information because he feels hes being haunted/stalked.

8) pg 303- What Oedipus learns about Polybus from the messenger was that he is dead and gone from growing age.

9) pg 307- It came about that Oedipus was raised as Polybus' son Because he was left on the hill with his feet pinned together and was found and given to Polybus.

10) pg 313- Oedipus discovers that he was the son of the kind Laius.

11) pg 322- Oedipus blinds himself by taking a pin from his wifes mothers dress and why was because he thought he was a disgrace because the prophecy came throught that he was marrying him mother and he has killed his father.

Thinking Through
Pg. 283
1) Oedipus sent for Tiresias because he is the only one who know about the death of Laius.
2)The Chorus feels that hes a great leader.
3)I think Oedipus is determined to discover the murderer of Lauis to make peace. Fearful that it will happen to him.

Pg. 300

1)At the place were three roads meet Oedipus killed a man that was his father the king but he didn't know he was his father or the king.
2)Oedipus ran away from his home in Corinth because he was scared that the prophecy about him killing his father would come true so he left.
3)Jocasta thought that the prophet and the prophecies were lies.

pg:314

1)The shepherd gave the baby to Polybus.
2)They think that hes a bad leader for killing a generation and that hes a bad leader.
3)He accidentally made the prophecy come true because he didn't know he was adopted and he ran away from people he thought were his parents but weren't really his parents and killed his real dad and married his mom accidentally.
4)I predict that he will probably kill himself or runaway.

Poems by Sappho

1)I think out of all three poems, that I understood the second one "He Is More Than a Hero" the best. I feel I understood that poem because it made more sence to me and got straight to the point. All in all I also thing I understood it best because it got me interested, unlike the others.

3)In the first poem the speaker is discribing a person and a setting. The person she is talking about is some girl that reminds her of a friend that had moved away and got married. The setting he is describing is the thronging cavalry.

In the second poem the speaker is describing like a situation about there feelings toward someone known as their hero.

The third poem the speaker has described a setting that is the holy temple that seems to be a graceful place.

4) I would have to say "She values intimate moments of friendship." applys to her best because in her first poem it tells how Helen reminds her of an old friend.
Another statement I would say best applys to her is "She appreciates the beauty of nature." because in the third poem she says how the cold springs babble through apple branches.

6)I think Christina Aguilera would do a swell job singing these songs because she has a strong voice and its very powerful. I think it would get the meaning out and more clear.

Writing Options 2

Remembering A Teacher

2.)Recall the best teacher you ever had, in any subject. Think about his or her methods of getting you to excel. Was this teacher like or unlike Drona? Present your ideas in a brief reflective essay.

The Best teacher I ever had would have to be my 5th grade teacher Mr. Ferry. He was a fun and random person. He was my math/social studies/language arts/science teacher because it was elementary school and we didn't switch classes. His methods toward getting his students exceled was making every thing fun, because in his eyes if its fun it will be done, but if lame then it there will be pain. Another method was he made the work hands on activities so that we would understand it better and he would relate it to our interests. This teacher in a way was like Drona because he has his own ways of teaching, but there weren't weird like Drona's. He just used common sence on what will help kids pay attention. All in all due to the way he made every day fun and exciting, I did learn alot in his class.

Poem. I Believe/Life. (Nicenet)

I Believe.
Life is to short to wake up in the morning with regrets.
It's just long enough to be what you want to be.
Life is for having a reason to live.
Make a difference, make a statement, make history.
Love the people who treat you right, and forget those who dont't, control the way your surroundings blossom and burn aroudn you,and believe that every thing happens for a reason.
If you get a chance, take it.
If it changes your life, let it.

Nobody said life was going to be easy, they just promised that it would all be worth it.

Gilgamesh

1)I thought it was interesting cause everything he worked for like vanished cause he lost the prikly vine that was sopose to make your youth come back. But he learned from his journey and he engraved it on stone for other people to learn also.

3) Gilgamsh can't accept the fact people die because one its a hard thing to get over especially since it was someone very close to him. Also i think hes affraid of death because he saw the way his friend died and hes scared the same thing will happen to him and he wants to aviod that.

4)He wanted to show him all he has done all he has accomplished being the king of Urk. (this is a guess) Also that he was showing him that it wasnt flooded like they would have expected after the big flood.

5)The event that had the strongest affect on Gilgamesh was obviously the death of his friend Enkidu cause he would have never gone on this journey if he didnt feel reponsible for his friends death.

6)I think he would be a wiser king unlike in the begging when he got ahead of himself. He might also apprecite life more because he knows how short it can be.

7)In our world today we know there is no way to aviod death and we know its coming. And we know theres no way around it unlike Gilgamesh who wanted a cure.

Think Through Mahabarata

1)My reaction to Arjuna was he was the smartest one to comprehend what the teacher, Drona, was trying to get her students to do without being specific.

3)Aruja had many traits but he was extremely skilled in using weapons. I think they admired him for that because he could defend himself and hunt.

4)I think Drona was a good teacher because he wasn't obvious he didn't tell you things straight up. He made you think a little. I think his teaching methods where interesting, he kinda liked to trick the students like with the alligator stunt, he was testing them to see who would react correctly.

5)I think Indian parents still say this story to their children how things aren't really as apparent as they seem and to focus and sometimes things are more obvious then you may think and that you shouldn't over think. Because all the students over thought they all answered the question just as Durona was asking it. But he was just trying to trick them. If the task was to aim and shoot at the bird and concentrate on the bird why would you care or see the people around you.

6)Drona reminds me of Mr.Meyagi from karate kid because he gave him tasks that didn't seem important at first but really helped the karate kid later in his fighting.

7)I think the lesson in the story was that not to think too much about the right answer and sometimes things are obvious but we tend to over think. Yes, I believe this moral is true because I myself tend to over think and then i notice that it was really more simple then i made it out to be.

Greek Culture

1) The religion of the ancient Greeks is different from Jews, Christians and Muslim because they didn't have a holy book such as sacred writings.

Family (Nicenet)

Hi, I think family is one the main things you need in this world to survive. Without it most of us would be nothing and would have nothing to turn back on. When theres no one around and you need help your familys will always be there unlesss you abuse that and always run to them for help when you need to start to learn on your own. Most people use the fact that there familys are always going to support them. Someone without a family is like a car with no motor IT DONT WORK. Soo I think Family is the most wonderful thing in the world.

Egyptian Literature

Critical Thinking
2. The tone of Nu's speech was kind of worried and disturbed, as if he had fear of the after life. The situation is a very important towards the Egyptians because its there thoughts and feelings about what their after life is going to be like.
3. The speaker thinks that Ra should be praised for opening the new horizon and making joyous days.
4. The speaker is delight about dreaming of standing next to her love because she is waiting or wanting to him to purpose to her so that dream will come true.
6. I think the last story "Whenever I leave you, I go out of breath", because all the other story's provide what the characters want not what there feeling and this story is how shes feeling about being with some one and how they make her feel.
7. The ways that the two poems differ are one is talking about being more in the relationship like marriage and the other is talking about the way she feels when she is with or without her love.
8. Egyptians attitudes compare to my society because both of us appreciate everyday life and have the same attitudes towards love.
